THE  LORD’S DAY SERVICE

AUGUST 29, 2010

WE GATHER IN THE PRESENCE of  GOD

Holy One, you met your Prophet Moses atop a glorious mountain.

Your Servant David discovered that you had come to be with him

in the dark, dusty, dry valleys of life.

We love to listen for your voice in an awesome anthem

or in the carefully crafted words of powerful poetry.

And yet, Lord, you also whisper to us as we’re washing dirty dishes

or sweeping the garage floor.

Holy One, enable us to meet you

where, and how, and when you choose to meet us.

OUR AFFIRMATION  of FAITH

Sometimes God’s incursions into our lives are surprising.

Sometimes God’s power comes to us when we least expect it

from people we least expect.

Sometimes we are healed, restored, saved by strangers.

This is the peculiar power of love taught by a stranger named Jesus.

This we believe:

when the power of love conquers the love of power

peace will prevail.

Most Holy One, who can turn our worries into wings of joy and our sorrows into songs of victory, protect our minds-n-hearts from being so preoccupied that we lose sight of your presence in our lives. Give comfort and solace to our sisters and brothers who are suffering or struggling. Strengthen our resolve to replace hatred with love; tension with trust; and selfishness with caring. We pray for gentle reminders from you regarding what is most important - not only for us - but for those around us. May your will be done with the gifts we dedicate to you this morning, praying as Christ Jesus did, “Our Father who art in heaven ….”
